GA:MA LAB

Global Asia: Mobilities and Arts Lab (GA:MA Lab)  is an interdisciplinary and collaborative project which stems from a shared urgency of studying art and its histories beyond the established Euro-American academic framework on what constitutes the “global”. There has been a growing interest in art history and its connected fields to explore transnational transits and their translations/expressions, as well as visual culture and artistic productions by minoritized and subaltern communities in places that may seem transient and liminal.

Rooted in our location at the margins of the Asian continent and the cusp of the African and Mediterranean worlds, this lab reflects on the meanings of Global Asia as the transversal dimensions of Asia encountered across the globe. The Lab centers its inquiries on alternative archives of art/culture, spaces in transitions, and places that translate histories of here and elsewhere from an interdisciplinary and grounded perspective. Our goal is to understand how creative and intellectual practices circulate, defining shared affinities and contribute to cultural discourses on migrations and contemporary diasporic belongingness.
