GA:MA LAB

The conceptual spark for the Global Asia: Mobilities and Arts Lab (GA:MA Lab) emerged from a set of recurring questions that surfaced in academic conversations, classrooms, exhibitions, and informal encounters: How do we speak about art and visual cultures when the usual geographic and methodological coordinates no longer suffice? How can we think about the ‘global’ beyond Euro-centric hierarchies and binaries? What kinds of histories and stories become visible when we begin our inquiries from sites shaped by movement, migration, fluidity and layered cultural encounters rather than from established centers? 

These questions took on particular significance in Doha. Walking through the city, between ports, museums, old and new neighborhoods where tradition and heritage are shaped and reshaped by constant cultural and artistic exchange across regions and continents, it became clear that we were in the right place. Doha, for its location and history, becomes a generative site to rethink creativity and knowledge-making processes as produced by complex relations, routes, and negotiations unfolding across lands, seas and oceans, and across continents. 

We believe that knowledge can only be built collectively. Our interdisciplinary exchanges with artists, curators and scholars from around the world have set in motion new synergies, nurturing a space for slow, grounded and collaborative inquiry—one attentive to transitions, minoritized practices, shared affinities and lived experiences that shape how art is made, circulated, and understood across Global Asia and beyond.
