2022People in Qatar, today, inherit a proud tradition of caring for wild birds. Traditional dovecotes, like the ones at Katara Cultural Village, provide shelter for thousands of doves, who
instinctively return to roost each night. Wild birds naturally pollinate flowers, propagate seeds and nourish the soil. The music of birdsong has been shown to reduce hypertension, to relieve
stress and to stimulate cognitive activity. The Seed Pod Mini, inspired by this heritage and these benefits, invites songbirds into domestic gardens and offers people a reason to step outside every day, to interact with nature. It is durable, gravity-fed, food-safe, easy-to-use and comes in a range of colors.
The product is the result of a multifaceted research project, which has, so far, led to four curated exhibitions, a peer-reviewed conference presentation, a peer-review paper
publication and a US design patent application. Working prototypes, 3D-printed and assembled in Qatar, are sold at the Studio7 design concept store in Msheireb, with proceeds
benefiting faculty and student research. Design development is currently underway to allow a shift to high volume production, to facilitate licensed, international distribution.
