bandhani arabi: the making of a tie-dyed typeface
By TypeAraby
2023The TypeCraft Initiative led by Ishan Khosla and TypeAraby led by Basma Hamdy are collaborating on a typeface that celebrates the rich craft traditions of South Asia and the Middle East, while also pushing the boundaries of contemporary design. By incorporating the intricate designs of Bhandani (tie-dye) and the calligraphic traditions of Arabic, Farsi and Urdu, we aim to create a typeface that is both visually stunning and culturally significant. Our project is a collaboration between our two initiatives and brings together a diverse team of designers who collaborated with Indian muslim women practicing the Bhandani craft in Bhuj india. The type is co-developed and co-created with the women in this community by adopting this craft as a departure point for a decorative display typeface.
